Evernham wants new team
Former car owner and crew chief, Ray Evernham, said prior to Sunday's season-ending Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway that he hopes to get a series of legal issues resolved in the coming weeks that may pave the way for a return in some capacity with a race team. Evernham has made no secret of his desire to rid himself of his minority stake in RPM, which previously was known as Gillett Evernham Motorsports -- and before that was simply Evernham Motorsports, in which he was founder and majority owner.

Stewart backs off Earnhardt slam
Tony Stewart said he has nothing against Dale Earnhardt Jr. despite some not-too-kind characterizations after a wreck in last Sunday's race at Phoenix. "Everybody knows when we are in the heat of the moment, it doesn't matter who it was. I would have said the same thing," Stewart said Saturday at Homestead-Miami Speedway. "It was being upset because we are running for all the points we can get right now and we took a hit in the points last week because of that incident. It didn't matter who it was."

Rick Hendrick added that he's working on a lifetime deal for Chad Knaus, the crew chief for Jimmie Johnson. Hendrick tried to sign Johnson, who's on track to win an unprecedented fourth straight championship on Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway, to a lifetime contract as well, but "I couldn't borrow enough money to make it work."

On Friday, Kahne continued to express skepticism with the proposed merger between RPM and Yates Racing and how the organization is being run. "I used to try and stay in the loop, and then things don't happen that they say will," he said. "At this point, I have one year left (on his RPM contract).
