Source: Damon won't take pay cut
Johnny Damon's preference is to remain with the Yankees, and while he has made that wish well-known, sources close to the veteran say he isn't about to give the Bombers a big discount to stay in pinstripes. A source close to Damon said that the outfielder believes his statistics over the past two years have been good enough that unless the market crumbles entirely like it did last winter for Bobby Abreu, he doesn't feel he should take a pay cut.

Mets eyeing Sheets
Ben Sheets hasn't pitched in the majors in more than a year, but that will not keep the Mets from keeping an eye on the former All-Star right-hander this winter. A major-league source confirmed that Sheets, 31, would be among a group of second-tier, relatively low-cost starting pitchers the Mets will consider this offseason while continuing their pursuit of top free-agent starter John Lackey.

Rockies considering catcher
Bracing for the potential loss of starter Yorvit Torrealba, the Rockies have expressed preliminary interest in free agent catcher Brian Schneider. The Rockies are also looking for right-handed batter off the bench who can play the first and third. Two names to keep an eye on are Bobby Crosby and Fernando Tatis.

Cubs block casino ad signs
The Cubs have fired the opening salvo in a dispute against a local casino, erecting two signboards in the back of the left-field bleachers, which would obscure a prominent casino ad in most television shots during game telecasts. The two large green wooden signboards were erected in the bleachers last week without fanfare. There currently is no advertising on them, but they're expected to be ready for the 2010 season.

Granderson to Mariners?
No one should be surprised if there are conversations between Dave Dombrowski, the Tigers president and general manager, and Jack Zduriencik, Seattle's GM, centering on trades involving Curtis Granderson or Edwin Jackson -- or perhaps both. Seattle wants a left fielder and more power in its lineup. Granderson is a lovely fit. The Mariners want another front-line starter, and Jackson obviously matches up. The Tigers would be interested in several of the Mariners' best young craftsmen, beginning with Brandon Morrow, a right-hander with a high-90s fastball who was Seattle's No. 1 draft pick in 2007 and who was high on Detroit's list that year when it selected Andrew Miller with its first-round pick.
