David Beckham has an option to own a future 20th team in Major League Soccer, the North American league's commissioner said Sunday. Speaking to reporters at halftime in the title-deciding MLS Cup final, which Beckham's L.A. Galaxy lost to Real Salt Lake on penalties, Garber dismissed speculation the England midfielder might be involved in a possible Montreal franchise.

Henry considered quitting after handball

Thierry Henry considered ending his France career over the uproar that surrounded the striker's blatant handball in last week's World Cup playoff victory over Ireland. "Oh yes," the France captain was quoted in Monday's French sports daily L'Equipe as saying when asked whether retiring from international soccer had crossed his mind. "Friday, when it all went too far, I was very worked up."

Chicago will soon make a decision whether to offer Coach Denis Hamlett a new contract. The guess here is that he will not return. The craziest rumor I heard was Hamlett will be let go and Jesse Marsch, a former Fire regular, retires at Chivas USA and immediately steps into the Chicago coaching role (a la Jason Kreis at RSL). Just a wild, unfounded rumor that was quickly dismissed by Insider contacts.

Chivas USA to hire Sampson

On the eve of what could be the Los Angeles Galaxy's first MLS Cup title since 2005, the man who led LA to its last championship looks ready to return to MLS. Steve Sampson is on the verge of being hired by Chivas USA as head coach, sources have told SBI. Sampson would replace Preki, who took over as Toronto FC head coach. While Sampson is the favorite to be hired, sources have told SBI that Chivas USA is still conducting interviews with several coaches with MLS experience. A final decision is expected in the next week or two.
